About

I'm Jeff Detmer, a software engineer who likes keeping work and the rest of life in the same frame.

I care a lot about building software that is useful, understandable, and durable. I also care about having interests that pull me away from the screen and help me pay attention to the world around me. This site is where those things meet.

What I do

Professionally, I work in software engineering. I like the combination of problem solving, communication, and craftsmanship that comes with turning messy ideas into systems people can rely on. Good software feels clear, calm, and well-considered to me, and that's usually the standard I'm aiming for.

What I like outside of work

Away from coding, I tend to spend my time in a handful of recurring lanes:

  • Kayaking, because being on the water resets my brain in a way almost nothing else does.
  • Fitness and working out, because I like routine, discipline, and tangible progress.
  • Golf, because it rewards patience and repetition.
  • Science and nature, because curiosity doesn't really turn off when the laptop closes.
  • Astronomy, because stepping outside and looking up is one of the quickest ways to regain perspective.
  • Gaming, because good systems, good stories, and good worlds are worth spending time in.

Why this site exists

I wanted a place that could hold more than a list of technologies or job titles. This site is for work, notes, hobbies, photos, and whatever else feels worth keeping. Some of it will stay evergreen, and some of it will be lighter updates as I add to it over time.
